E Cigarettes Better Than NRT

e cigarettes, LSSS

A recently released study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown e cigarettes to be twice as useful when it comes to helping smokers quit smoking than NRT.

What is NRT

NRT or Nicotine Replacement Therapy is the use of products such as nicotine gum, sprays, patches and more to help a smoker overcome nicotine withdrawal and cravings, making it easier to quit smoking.

The Study & The Results

Funded by the National Institute for Health Research and Cancer Research UK, this study looked directly at the effects of giving one group  of smokers NRT and one group an e cigarette and flavoured e liquid. Eight hundred and eighty six smokers took part in the trial.

Those who had been given ecigs and e juice found that they had much less of an urge to smoke again and generally suffered less with concentration problems, irritability, and other common symptoms associated with giving up smoking. The conclusion of the trial, twelve months later found that of all of the e cigarette users, 18% has given up smoking completely whereas by comparison nearly half as many trial users who were given NRT had given up, just 9.9%.

In terms of dealing with the nicotine replacement issue that makes giving up smoking, vaping offers the “Gold standard” said the lead researcher for the study, Professor Hajek of Queen Mary University of London. The team involved in this study are by no means the only official voices lending their support to e cigarettes and e liquids as being useful cessation methods. In spring 2018 Public Health England announced that they find vaping to be at least 95% less harmful than smoking. PHE are backed by ASH, Cancer Research and a number of other health and science professionals.

Why Do E Cigarettes Help More Smokers?

While nicotine, an addictive substance, certainly makes giving up smoking difficult, there is more to it. Scientists and psychologists have found that when giving up smoking, an individual has to deal with withdrawal from much more than just nicotine. The physical habits, such as having something in your hand, the hand to mouth action, the social aspect and the emotional connection all play a part in your smoking enjoyment, therefore are additional things to give up.

Vaping helps enormously when it comes to dealing with all aspects of giving up smoking as:

  1. E cigarettes contain e liquids which can contain nicotine. Smokers can switch to vaping, enabling them to have the nicotine they are used to without any of the toxic chemicals found in tobacco cigarettes (confirmed by the World Health Organisation who also class tobacco cigarettes as having the potential to cause cancer).
  2. Using an e cigarette enables you to simulate the same hand to mouth action and inhale/exhale experience you would be used to as a smoker.
  3. Socially, more and more people are vaping and the vaping community is open, friendly and supportive. The flipside of this is the fact that smokers are considered anti-social and the habit is very much frowned upon. Fewer and fewer places welcome smoking now.
  4. Cheap tobacco e liquids even allow smokers to continue enjoying the taste of tobacco, as well as experimenting with other flavours, if this is their wish.

In Conclusion

It is clear why so many support the use of e cigarettes as a cessation aid and quite possibly why NRT isn’t as effective. NRT certainly has its place however for some people NRT will only “treat” or deal with one part of the issue that smokers face when trying to give up their harmful habit.
