Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerin?

A question that we are asked often here at 99p Eliquids is “Which is better, VG or PG?”. Our answer starts the same way, “Neither”. Whether you choose high VG e liquid or more of a 50/50 PG/VG mix (or any ratio with more propylene glycol e liquid base) will depend on what you are looking for and your own individual tastes. Below we tell you a little more about these two e liquid base types and how you may use them to your advantage to make the perfect vape for you.

Why Do We Need E Liquid

First of all, why do we need e liquids? An e liquid is the substance that is heated via an e cigarette in order to make a flavoured vapour that may be inhaled and exhaled. This can be a very enjoyable experience for a vaper. E liquids contain few ingredients, namely a base which is a mixture of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, water, nicotine at varying strengths and flavourings are all expertly combined in order to produce an e liquid. These e liquids may come in a huge range of e liquid flavours, making it easy for vapers to find something that suits them.

Vegetable Glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is a popular e liquid base as it produces a thick and full vapour that is perfect for those who enjoy big vape clouds infused with flavour. It is a particular favourite with sub ohm vapers, vapers who vape using low resistance coils to amplify taste and vapour production. As a natural product vegetable glycerin has its own slightly sweet flavour. It is also a thicker liquid than PG e liquid. VG has been used for numerous production processes including make-up manufacturing and for making artificial food sweeteners.

Propylene Glycol E Liquid

Propylene glycol (PG) is completely tasteless and does not have any smell to it. You will often see it listed in numerous other products such as in asthma inhalers, food production, body and face care products and more. PG has been verified as being safe for use by the USA Food & Drug Administration. One of the reasons that PG is so popular is that it offers a firm throat hit which is the pleasurable, somewhat harsh feeling in the back of the throat when you inhale cigarette smoke. For this reason, new vapers often favour e liquids with more PG in at first, as it replicates something they are used to. PG e liquids, being completely taste-free often offer a clearer flavour than some VG e liquids, although the difference between the two is slight.

Very rarely a vaper may find that they are sensitive to PG, getting a very dry mouth and throat or even an irritable cough. Current statistics show that few than 2% of vapers have this sensitivity. If you find you are getting a persistent cough it might be worth choosing an e liquid which has more VG in it.

Which E Liquid Base is Best

Neither! Both offer numerous advantages to those looking for a pleasurable vape. Both offer different benefits, ie a harsher throat hit with PG and smoother vaping and big vape clouds for high VG vaping enthusiasts. With our less than £1 e liquid flavours to choose from you can afford to try a few different e liquids, some high VG and some a 50/50 VG/PG mix to see which you prefer. That’s the brilliant thing about vaping, you are completely in control!
