Avoid Coil Burn: Top Tips

The wonder of vaping is that you are able to completely customise your vaping enjoyment. You may choose which e liquid flavours appeal to you, what device you prefer and even the nicotine strength you may enjoy. In order to maximise your enjoyment however you need to know some vaping basics, such as how to avoid coil burn.

Dry coils, burnt out coils and poorly maintained e cigarettes do nothing for your vaping enjoyment whatsoever. These top tips will help you avoid common pitfalls so that you may get the very best out of your ecig device.

What is a Coil?

When looking at ecig parts the atomizer is the common name for the part of the e cigarette which creates a flavoured vapour from e juice. The magic that occurs inside the atomizer happens when a heating coil (made from resistance wire) is heated via a lithium battery. The coil soaks up the e liquid in the tank to produce the breathable vapour.

Choose Your Temperature Wisely

If you vape at a high temperature/ high wattage the expected life-span of your coil will shorten significantly. Avoid coil burn by looking after your coil, especially if vaping at high temperature as not only will you be more likely to get through e liquid more quickly, you will be at a higher risk of dry burning the coil.

Take short, less frequent draws on the e cig if vaping at a higher wattage and be extra vigilant regarding how much e liquid is left in the tank. Coils need to be soaked in e juice before being heated and so if e liquid runs out more quickly than expected or the e liquid doesn’t get a chance to coat the coil due to high temp vaping, you are going to have a dry hit problem.

Avoid coil burn by simply keeping your eyes open and being more aware of how and how much you vape.

Keep an Eye on E Liquid Levels

It is important to remain aware of how much e liquid is left in your tank at all times. In order to work properly a coil and wick need to be soaked in e juice. When there’s not enough in the tank the coil goes dry and you are left with a dry burning taste which is pungent to say the least. Think about vaping the smell that you get when you burn a pan on the stove. It’s nasty.

If you want to avoid dry coils be aware of how much e liquid you get through and how heavy a vaper you are. Check visually often (most tanks are see through) in order to avoid nasty surprises and the need to fully clean out your device and replace parts prematurely.

Look at Your PG/VG Ratio to Avoid Coil Burn

If you are finding that you are getting through e liquid, and coils especially faster than you’d like and expect, it may be worth looking at the e juices you’re using. High VG e liquids don’t have a bad reputation for causing coil wastage. That said, they are naturally thicker. This means that if you do not clear your tank out periodically you may be left with gunky e liquid left over, more so with VG than PG.

This could cause coil damage/dry coil burning. If you know that you aren’t great at regular cleaning it may be an idea to lay off the high VG e liquids. This one would be a shame though if high VG ticks boxes for you. It’s certainly popular with big cloud vapers.

In Summary

If you want to prolong the life of your coils you need to maintain your device, ensure that you have enough e liquid in the tank at all times, be aware of how you vape and of course need to start with decent quality coils. Keep these tips in mind and you should find the lifespan of your coils are extended and that you have fewer burning coil issues, or even better, none at all.
